The game's story mode is not divided by character, as it was in previous Samurai Warriors titles, but by a collection of storylines that involve collections of characters. Character designs and animations were redesigned to be different than before to create a 'refreshing. Like Dynasty Warriors 6, the game's theme was to completely revive the series. There is also a new mode that uses a player-created character. Samurai Warriors 3 (3, Sengoku Musou 3) is the third main installment in the Samurai Warriors franchise and the second title of the series to be a Wii exclusive (the other being Samurai Warriors: Katana). Also for new or old characters that had no story on the Wii version (Garasha, Okuni etc) the narrator's voice is also different. Samurai Warriors 4 offers over fifty playable characters and feature a character-switching mechanic similar to Samurai Warriors: Chronicles on the 3DS, allowing the player to alternate control between two characters on the battlefield. As Samurai Warriors 3 was a Wii exclusive before being converted to the PS3 and before Gouri Daisuke commited suicide sometimes a new voice is used for Takeda Shingen on the Career mode.

It was released in North America on Octoon PS3 and Vita along with a new PS4 version. The game was released on both PlayStation 3 and Vita. The 2014 release was planned to mark the tenth anniversary of the franchise, which began with the release of the original Samurai Warriors in 2004. Samurai Warriors 4 was released in Japan by Tecmo Koei on March 20, 2014.
